What the Heck Happened to jcCommerce?!

The database that runs this site died. I don’t know if I did it, or if mySQL did it, or if little green trolls did it. All I know is that one day I looked at it and *poof* there was no jccommerce database on the server.
Thats ok though, because we back up all databases on this server nightly to a secure backup server in the datacenter. All I had to do was log in to the backup server, pull over the last backup, and restore, right?
Herein lies the problem. The productive application on this server, Secure Delivery, is our #1 priority. Everything that happens to this server from apache/php updates to new kernel versions must be 100% compatible with Secure Delivery first and foremost- after all, it is kinda our business and customers rely on us to deliver their products.
On the other hand, this blog is not even on the priority list when it comes to making sure the technical details are correct to work with it. Call it lazy or irresponsible if you must, but the fact of the matter is Secure Delivery is way way way way way more important to us than my soapbox and there are just so many hours in the day.
Our backup scheme is designed around the unique way that Secure Delivery stores data and not around the way I store my mundane posts on this blog. As a result, while I had a complete record of every single blog post ever made, it was not in an easy to restore format like simple sql dump. This pretty much means I would have to manually restore each record.
Yeah, the hell with that. To be honest, I almost cried when I figured out that I would have to work countless hours to restore my blog. Then, I had a revelation…
It’s just a blog.
Thats right folks, this is the internet and this is just one of eleventy billion blogs. How many people will cry if my half baked personal posts get expunged? Yeah, not many. Life is too short to worry about things that don’t matter, and as much as I would like to believe my rants and quips are inspirational to many the fact is they probably aren’t worth the time it would take to copy and paste them from plain text.
Still, there are a few posts that I am proud of- I will be restoring those manually. I would like to keep the Secure Delivery posts about creating and marketing the service, so I am going to manually restore those too. After all, thats really all that matters to me online now.
So in conclusion sorry for the blank blog- I’ll get my link love set back up soon and get the content I like up lickity split, no sh*%.

Sorry to hear you’ve pretty much lost your blog. A manual restore would be a nightmare. There’s no other way to pull the info out? I know your business partner is a good developer but if you want to drop me a sample of the blog I’m happy to see if I can write something to maybe do the job.
Of course a clean slate (with your best posts) is always a good thing :) I’ve deleted old rubbish in the past that I just don’t want to bother having anymore.
Looking forward to the new stuff as ever :)
