The Official jcCommerce Blogging HQ Beer Fridge Cam

26th October, 2007 - Posted by Chance -

Ok, so there is nothing official about this- I am just playing around with a network security camera that my wife’s boss let me play around with. This camera is currently sitting on my computer desk in the often neglected bonus room of my house and aimed at my trusty mini-fridge. The bonus room is the little room they tacked on over the garage as a “bonus” (duh), and its my fortress of solitude where I work on Secure Delivery, do my blogging, shoot people in video games, and look at naked ladies on the internet (Just kidding honey!)

Ok, seriously- Just wondering if I can insert a bit of javascript in a post and refresh an image on 30 second intervals, so here we go:

The cam is a network model that transmits over my home LAN. It uploads a new snapshot to a directory on my website every 30 seconds. The reason it’s sitting on my desk beside my router and pointed at my corner is because I only had a 3 foot network cable, and the beer fridge was the only item within reach that I thought could use some “extra security”.

I won’t be home until around 8PM EST tonight (GMT -5) so its going to be quite boring for the next 10 hours or so, but with any luck you might see a kitten!

If anyone sees the mail man drinking my beer then my Wife and I will need to have a talk when I get home, so be sure to leave a comment if somebody needs to get their legs broke.

Edit: In retrospect, it would have been a lot easier to see if it was refreshing if I would have left the timestamp on the snapshots, but I’m not at home right now and can’t change it until tonight. Luckily, the sun is rising as I am testing this and the reflective face of the fridge is playing the light at different angles in each snapshot as clouds run by.
